I have just returned from the annual Cold Smoke Festival held at Whitewater Winter Resort, Nelson B.C. I had the opportunity to travel with one of Revelstokes finest photographers, Bruno Long, who was selected to participate in the Cold Shot Foto Face Off. Up against four other notable “shooters”, constrained by a four day time limit and a loose geographical boundary of “the Kooteneys”, our much deliberated upon Plan A came to an abrupt end at 8 am about four kilometers up a sled road when Bruno’s sled blew a geyser of coolant ten feet into the blue sky. On to Plan B?
As we rolled into Nelson on Friday night we were satisfied we had done our best. With ski conditions being more like May than March, finding the “Cold Smoke” powder that the festival draws it’s moniker from was near impossible. A day in Rogers Pass, one in the New Denver area, and a couple at Kooteney Pass netted Bruno over 400 pics to choose from to compile a five min slide show for the Face Off on Saturday nite. He did an amazing job, putting on a beautiful show that tied him for second place with a high-profile photog from the states. First went to Kari Medig, a friend from Kimberly, with a super cool stop animation compilation about skiing Pillow Lines without even leaving the bedroom! The party wasn’t all that it could have been, but it was great to see Bruno win a nice chunk of change and a sweet jacket..
The highlights for skiing were the right hand chute in the photo below, and the West face of Ymir peak which towers above the humble Whitewater ski area. Stay tuned for some of Brunos pic’s and a link to the slide show.
